I receive a good bit of mail from readers. It’s a wonderful, gratifying feeling to hear from someone who’s enjoyed my work. I don’t even mind the occasional critique, as long as it’s not mean spirited. I read every piece of mail and always try to personally respond to each and every letter—with one exception. I don’t respond to prison mail. I have a couple of dozen letters filed away in my cabinet at home that I’ll never answer. Being the infinitely curious crime writer that I am, I do, of course, read the letters.
A few years ago I received a letter from a young man who was detained and awaiting trial for a “high profile crime.” He’d enjoyed my book and was very complimentary of my writing. He claimed all of his “problems” stemmed from his childhood (remember, sociopaths want you to feel sorry for them.) He wanted me to write his story. Like any good crime fiction writer would, I googled him. There aren’t many things that give me an honest to goodness chill, but the things I learned about this guy creeped me out in a very big way.
He’d bludgeoned his live in girlfriend to death with a baseball bat while four of her five children were in the house. His girlfriend was a police officer. After murdering her, the man went on the run. Nine police agencies were involved in the ensuing search. During the manhunt, two additional police officers were killed when their chopper went down. I’m no psychologist or psychiatrist, but there’s no doubt in my mind this guy is the epitome of a sociopath. A dangerous, heartless individual who lives only to further his agenda and serve himself.

Eeeek! How creepy, but fascinating at the same time. I can only imagine the chills you get when reading these letters!

What's sick about this guy is he things he is worth becoming a story. He idolizes himself enough to be the "hero" of the story. Tisk!
